Johnston says goodbye to NF Council

Johnston_Says_GoodbyeThere were a few tears shed as Mayor Stan Johnston took his leave from municipal politics on Monday night in Plevna. At the end of a forty-minute meeting dealing with a variety of mostly housekeeping issues, Johnston banged down the gavel for the last time.

Before proceeding to the next task at hand, the swearing in of the new Council, deputy Mayor Gleva Lemke expressed councils gratitude to the two departing councillors, Elaine Churchill and Ed Buck, before presenting two tokens of the townships appreciation to Johnston, who has been the only Mayor North Frontenac has known,

One of the presents was a rendition of Bon Echo rock by water colourist Donna Griffin-Smith. The other present was a hand made clock by Brian Black, who, aside from making clocks and other objects, is the townships health inspector.

Johnston, who was clearly moved by the warmth of the tribute, said I had been hoping to get through the meeting quietly, but this is much appreciated.

Official Plan The township has received a response to its Official Plan from the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing. The response asks for nine minor wording changes in the Act, which council agreed to. The Official Plan will be finalised 20 days after the province receives councils acceptance of the new wording. Among the changes, there was one that might have implications. It deals with setbacks. The Official Plan requires a 30-metre setback from the high water mark for any building. The changes talk about exceptions to the 30-metre rule, and outlines how these can be accommodated.

Waste Management Addington Highlands has agreed in principle to become a funding partner with North Frontenac in a feasibility study into the small- scale incineration of garbage. The Waste Management Committee has also met with Karen Fisher of Frontenac County to work on applications for grants to look more closely at incineration as an option for garbage.
