The Frontenac Environmental Fair

Saturday June 5 is World Environment Day, the last day of World Environment Week. Globally, people are celebrating our increased awareness about and knowledge of natural and human environments. We also will be celebrating major gains in the condition of our global environments compared to the earlier era right up to the 1960s.

To mark the occasion, an Environmental Fair will be held in Sharbot Lake on June 5th. Events will take place at the Oso hall and at the beach as well. In the morning, a Stewardship planning workshop, led by Tracy Moore, will be held. The workshop will be an opportunity for landowners to learn about the benefits of stewardship planning, and they will receive a workbook on stewardship planning for natural areas. To register for this workshop, which is free, contact Tracy Moore at 531-5733 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

From noon on, events will kick off at the beach, where 15 or more groups will have displays. These include a kayaking and boating demonstration by Frontenac Outfitters, a display by the Upper Canada Wood Co-operative, Mining Watch Canada, and Mississippi, Rideau, and Catarqui Conservation, among others.

Within the Oso Hall, short rotating presentations will be held throughout the afternoon. These include a presentation on backyard burning and Well Aware, both by the Lanark and Leeds Green Community; Bear proofing your property by Jason Ritchie of the Ministry of Natural Resources; and Lake Friendly Living by Mississippi Valley Conservation.

There will also be a draw at the beach, with prizes donated by Prince Edward County artist Mia Lane, an afternoon pontoon boat rental, and a night of free camping at the Desert Lake Family Resort.

The high quality of natural environments in the Frontenacs will be celebrated at the Fair, and stewardship is one way that we can protect those relationships and extend and enhance the support of businesses and lifestyles that depend on environmental quality.

The sponsors of the Frontenac Environmental Fair are, in themselves, indications of the progress being made in improving our relationships to our environments.

The Frontenac Environmental Partnership was just incorporated this year. FEP will improve coordination and communication among the many stewardship and property-owner groups already working in the Frontenacs. Sharing information among the many separate lake associations, for example, will help move all the associations up to the level of the groups that are making the most progress.

Partnering with the FEP to present the Frontenac Environmental Fair is the Frontenac Stewardship Council. The FSC is one of over 40 Stewardship Councils in Ontario. Each has a Coordinator who is a Ministry of Natural Resources staff member, and each receives a small annual budget from MNR. The Council is a group of volunteers from the county who are interested in stewardship and who know the land, the people and sometimes have a great deal of knowledge from their other life to apply to Stewardship Council activities.

The 2004 Fair is the first chance for FEP and FSC to cooperate in this fashion and it is to be hoped that it is highly successful and will continue into the future. Your attendance and support is critical. Everyone of all ages is welcome. All events are free.
