Verona Sand Road Back on Map

by Wilma Kenny

South Frontenac Township, after several years work by staff and committee members, has passed a by-law establishing the names of all the streets and lanes in the township. This time-consuming task has been necessary for the implementation of a 911 Enhanced emergency response system. Residents of Verona will be pleased to see that Verona Sand Lake Road is back where they wanted it. A complete list of roads, streets and lanes, with accompanying maps, is located at the Township offices in Sydenham.

All Terrain Vehicles: Council will be holding a public meeting Tuesday July 20, 7:00 pm, at Loughborough Public School to receive comments from township residents on the issue of allowing ATVs to use public roads. Council also received a letter expressing concern about the hazards 4-wheelers and motorcycles present to other users of the Cataraqui Trail. Councillor Hahn offered to bring the letter to the attention of the CRCA.

Recycling: Council authorized the Sustainability Committee to develop a request for proposal (RFP) for the collection of blue box materials and household waste in South Frontenac. This RFP shall permit contractors to include separate proposals for any District, for either blue box, waste or integrated proposals to cover the whole Township. Karen Fischer, Manager of Economic Development Frontenac County will help the committee with this work.

Roads: Roads approved for surface treatment this year include: parts of Westport Road, Bedford Road north of the ski hill, Camden Portland Boundary road and part of Yarker Road, and Stage Coach Road from Orser to Railton.

Parks and Recreation: Council agreed to review the Central Recreation Committees November report as soon as possible.

Provincial Infrastructure Funding: Council approved a letter to the Provincial Government listing three projects: Sydenham Water Supply, Sunbury Road Bridge, and Mitchell Creek Bridge, that needed financial assistance, and might be eligible for grant funding under the recently announced Federal/Provincial program. This letter states that the water project requires $1,200,000 beyond the amount supported by OSTAR funding. Councillor Stowe commented that he felt the current flood of signs in the village were unfairly stating a cost per household, when no final price had been determined.

Meet the Candidates Night in Sydenham

A relatively sparse group of the mostly-committed turned up at the Legion hall last week to ask questions of the Lanark, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington candidates. Stuart Hayden kicked off the evening by listing some of the details of Sydenhams water woes, finishing with: "My vote can be bought, and Ill be downstairs." McCormick commented that "Some engineering firm did not make a proper assessment, and now it will cost a lot more money." He referred to the need for a federal environmental assessment. Reid spoke of similar problems in a lot of places, and Ross referred to the range of innovative technology available that would not require chlorination. Baranyi commented on "a certain lack of accountability on the part of some local representatives." As neither councillors nor other members of the village water committee were present, this issue was not pursued.

Questions followed about the military, gun registration, alternate energy, the cost of post secondary education, health care and support for arts and culture. There were no particular surprises in the answers and comments.

The candidates, for whom this was one of many all-candidate nights, seemed to have developed a degree of road-show camaraderie. MC Jeff Green and timer Marilyn Crawford helped keep both speakers and audience civilized and on task.
