Relay For Life all set for Flinton

By Jeff Green

With one week to go, planning for the fist ever Relay for Life to be held in Addington Highlands is pretty much on schedule. “We now have 32 or 33 teams registered” said key organizer Carolyn Hasler, “and a bunch of fund raising events have already taken place.”

Plans to feed and entertain over 400 participants are being finalized, and the sale of “Luminarias”, candles in memory of loved ones that will light up the track on the grounds of the Flinton Recreation Centre, are ongoing.

A special mini-relay, which will be held for residents at the Pine Meadow Nursing Home this week (Friday June 4) on a track at the home, has raised over $700 so far.

Cathy Meeks along with her relay team, Cathyıs Clowns organized and ran a golf tournament to bring in funds for their “Relay for Life” team. The team raised almost $1000 and all participants had a great day of golf, a good meal at Hunters Creek Golf Course and also won a large number of prizes donated by local businesses.

“The entire community has taken this on,” said Carolyn Hasler, “from youngsters to seniors. There are even a couple of teams lined up from the school [North Addinton Education Centre].
