Caboose on the loose no more
First, the 30-ton caboose that was purchased by the Central Frontenac Railway Heritage Committee had to have its wheels and cab removed. They were placed by crane on one transport trailer and the body of the caboose on another. The three vehicles then drove to Sharbot Lake, and the crane then carefully put the caboose back together on the track bed that the committee has built at their living museum site by the Trans-Canada Trail in Sharbot Lake. The committee plans to house artefacts in the caboose. “It will have to be a tourist attraction,” said committee member Gary Giller, “but first it will be completely refurbished. It will look completely different from what you see now. The Railway Heritage Committee has undertaken a fundraising campaign to pay for the cost of the caboose and the expensive move from Vankleek Hill.
