Flinton Relay for Life

By Jeff Green

Organizers of the Relay for Life event, which is scheduled for the Flinton Recreation Centre on June 11 & 12, have been hard at work since January, and although the event is still six weeks off they have already had a measure of success.

According to coordinator Carolyn Hasler, 32 teams have been formed thus far, each with between 10 and 18 members. “Our goal when we started out was to have 35 teams participating, so we are doing pretty well, but we still want more people to come forward” Hasler said.

Among the teams that have already registered there are several from North Addington Education Centre, as well as teams named Mission McFadden, the 2nd hand Roses and Kathy's Clowns.

The Relay for Life is an all-night event, and it includes food, entertainment, and a lot of social time. It requires a large, committed to team to pull off the event, and Hasler said that she has been impressed how people have come forward.

“Fred Perry is helping with the food; Scott Pettigrew is letting us use his equipment and is arranging a lot of the music; and there is going to be Karaoke that someone else is organizing, and possibly a fashion show,” said Carolyn Hasler.

The committee is seeking more volunteers to work on the day of the event in addition to more participants.

As well, the sale of luminarias, candles that ring the track during the darkest hours of the night, is just getting underway. They sell for $5 apiece, and include a label where names can be written. Luminarias are purchased in memory of loved ones or in honour of cancer survivors. The survivors’ lap at the start of the relay and the lighting of the luminarias at about 10:00 pm are the most poignant reminders of the importance of the Relay for Life as a fundraising campaign.
