Only 9%, EH?

Here we go again! The township wants a new truck; the village of Sharbot Lake wants a new train museum, and Mountain Grove wants to move a perfectly good ball diamond which is used so often these days, from one side of the road, to the other behind the new fire hall for only 9% more of your hard earned money

What do I want? Not much really; being from the wrong side of Hwy #7, what I would like to see done with my 9% is maybe a load of gravel on the road, from time to time. And maybe, just maybe, the road graded when it needs to be instead of having to negotiate (beg & plead) with the roads dept. to have it graded after my kid suffers a head injury from hitting his head on the roof of the school bus.

And yes, of course, those wonderful potholes! (Anti Personal Vehicle Traps) to be filled at least in a timely fashion, maybe, in three weeks instead of the current three months or again with begging & pleading, whichever comes first. You might think I’m kidding - go have a look at the sucker at the end of Kennebec Bridge. That puppy will suck in a half-ton truck, let alone a motorcycle. Last but not least, if we can afford it, go buy the boys new shovels to actually fill in the potholes!

I don’t know about the rest of the readers north of #7, but I’m getting a little tired of hearing the wish list of the larger communities, so I thought I would create one of my own. Really all I want is a pothole fixed so I can keep some cash in my pocket instead of giving it all to the, um, local garages?

I’m not sure about you folks, but I for one will be doing some serious thinking about the last bunch of promises made by the current council considering this is an election year.

Central Frontenac Taxes

How interesting to note on the front page of the April 15 edition the juxtaposition of articles pertaining to tax hikes in Frontenac County.

Reading from right to left: South, under 2%; North 2.5%; Central 9%. Equally notable is the brief item on the back page about a new sign for the township
office, a mere $5,800 (less a 40% rebate from LOLTA). How fortunate we are who live in Central Frontenac!

Firefighters Avert Disaster

Last week a grass fire broke out on the north shore of Horseshoe Lake, which has several seasonal residences. The fire broke out somewhere close to the shoreline and with the severe wind at that time quickly progressed inland and east along the shore line, heading for two cottages. The Central Frontenac Department quickly responded with men and their equipment. Since the area is boat access only, they had to make several trips back and forth across the lake by boat. The Arden crew were first on the scene and quickly accessed the situation and realized that the fire was progressing very rapidly and immediately called in for backup from Mountain Grove and Sharbot Lake.

All too often we find ourselves being very critical of the fine services we have here in Central Frontenac with never a good word for the fine job they
do. I would like to congratulate the entire Central Frontenac Fire Department for their quick response and professional manner in which they handled a very serious situation that could easily have caused several
thousands of dollars in damage. One leg of the grass fire had reached one of the cottages and was starting to burn underneath the deck when it was extinguished in time to prevent it from igniting the dry deck.

Congratulations to all the firefighters.
