International Adult Learners’ Week

By Carol Pepper

Are you up for a challenge?

March 1 to March 7, 2010 is designated as International Adult Learners’ Week and the invitation is out for you to participate in a learning challenge. The international community suggests you try to learn something new... find new ways to use technology or take up a new hobby for instance.

Why not drop by Northern Connections Adult Learning Centre to see what new skills you could try out? You can sign up for a computer course, or learn how to use social media like blogging, Facebook, or Twitter. You can take the time to teach someone else a new technical skill. You can inspire others to learn by telling your own story.

Computer Basics are being offered on Wednesday and Friday mornings, beginning on March 17, from 9 am-noon. Courses are also being offered on Unlocking the Internet on March 3, 10, 24, and 31. Whether you are a novice or you simply want to brush up your skills, you can take these courses free of charge. Call for more information or to register at 613-279-2499.

Ongoing at the centre are Clay Play Days, where Joanne Pickett of Arden Pottery instructs a small group on how to do hand-made pottery such as mugs, tiles and planters, decorated and inscribed with designs. We just finished our second day experimenting with clay to create useful and beautiful items to use at home. As well as an opportunity to learn new skills, this also provides a chance for people who have not visited Northern Connections before to become familiar with all the services that Northern Connections has to offer.

Recently, Northern Connections delivered programs in the community about personal rights and self-advocacy, retail customer service, and creative cooking on a budget.

The following are two courses we plan to offer in the next two weeks: Creative Cooking and Nutritious Foods at the Child Centre and Storybook Memories, a course to assist parents of young children in making their own storybooks, based on digital photography of their family’s activities, offered in Plevna.

If you are up to the learning challenge for this or other training, please call 613-279-2499 to sign up.
