Haiti Auction tops $1,000

By Jeff Green

As of Tuesday night, (February 9), the highest bid for a trip for two to the Sirenis Tropical Suites and Spa in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, was $1,000.

The trip was won by Jerry Ackerman from the “Turn up a Winner” promotion at Country Style Restauarants, and Ackerman approached the Frontenac News to arrange for the sale of the trip, with all the proceeds going to the Haitian Relief effort.

Country Style agreed to waive the non-transference clause in their contest. In addition, this week Country Style has decided to cover the departure taxes and fuel charge surcharge for the winning bidder, a cost of about $640.

So, the winning bidder will only have to cover transportation to Toronto and sundry expenses on the trip such as room service, gratuities, telephone calls, insurance, etc.

All of the money that is raised through the campaign will be donated to charities as chosen by Bill Powers and John Green of International Rescue, who spent time in Port au Prince last month trying to rescue people.

Bidding will continue until 12:00 noon on Monday February 15.

Bidding can be done through email at nfnews@frontenac.net or by phoning 613-279-3150. Bidders are asked to include a phone number if bidding by email or to leave a return phone number if they phone and get the answering service.

As the final deadline approaches, we will contact the bidders who have remained active to give them a chance at a final bid.

An event is being organised at the Napanee Country Style for the presentation of the prize. The trip must be taken by January 31st, 2011, and some blackout dates do apply.
