Loughborough PS students Abby Pajur, Katie Babcook, Taryn Blais, Callum Leach and Abbey Blais collected over $500 for Haiti at their school

The announcement came over the PA system at Loughborough Public School in Sydenham on the morning of Jan. 25 that staff and students had raised just over $500 for Haiti by donating their lose change.

The idea was the brain child of LPS students Callum Leach and Taryn Blais, who along with their fellow students Katie Babcook, Abby Pajur and Abbey Blais, collected change from staff and students in the school’s main foyer during their morning nutritional breaks every day last week.

Taryn said, “We heard about the earthquake and wanted to help children and their families in Haiti.”

Callum added, “We also thought that the money could be used for their schools, water, food and medical equipment. Katie Babcook felt that loose change was “a good thing to ask people for since everyone has some to give.”

After collecting the change Taryn and her sister, with the assistance of Sydenham High School student Chris Pritchard, counted up the change and the total amount was then donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

Cara Blais, who teaches kindergarten at LPS, is the mom of two of the students involved. She assisted in the campaign and admitted to feeling extremely proud of the efforts of the students.

The school’s vice principal Chad Taylor reiterated those feelings and said, “The kids did a really great job and everyone here at the school feels extremely proud.”
