LPS fundraiser: a multi-sensory successBy Julie Druker
On Oct. 3 a fundraiser was held at Loughborough Public School in Sydenham to raise money for a $40,000 multi-sensory classroom. The room will be built at LPS as part of the special education program and the fundraiser was organized by Lisa Fenwick with the help of a number of volunteers from the community. Cara Lacelle of Sydenham attended the event and understands the importance of providing specialized sensory tools to children with disabilities. She works for Ongwanada, an agency in Kingston that serves adults and children with special needs. Her son Cody is a graduate of LPS from the special needs class. She explained, “We’ve come along way in learning how to access every child’s hidden emotions through sensory stimulation. These children, who often cannot vocalize their wants and needs, need to have every avenue open to them of getting information from the world.” Children and their parents spent the day stimulating their senses and fundraising in the hopes that children in the community with disabilities will in the near future reap the benefits of a new multi-sensory classroom at LPS.
