The temperature was anything but tropical in Sharbot Lake last Friday Jan. 16. But members of the Relay For Life Committee were thinking about the warm summer weather as they held a luau at Sharbot Lake High School to kick off the 2009 Central and North Frontenac Relay For Life.

They are hoping for warm dry weather on the evening of June 12, when the 3rd annual relay will take place. The relay has been the most successul community fundraising event in recent local history, raising over $67,000 in 2008 alone.

Ann Howes, who runs the food booth at the Relay, said the event is more than a fundraiser. “It's a great big reunion, a chance for everyone to spend time together,” she said.

Last year there were 29 teams of between 12 and 15 members participating in the all-night event, and organisers are hoping for even more in 2009.

Anyone interested in forming or joining a team, please call Sandra Clow at the Township of Central Frontenac, 613-279-2935. Volunteers are also needed for various jobs. Call Claire Macfarlane at 613-279-1133.
