Northern Highlights: North Addington brings a community together

By Katie Ohlke

Next Wednesday, North Addington Education Centre opens its doors to the public to host an Arts, Crafts and Community Fair that will showcase local artisans and school groups and well as community groups.  Visitors will also be able to access the flu shot clinic.

Organizer Melissa Randle, a Science and English teacher at NAEC decided to revisit the winter craft show idea.  “I had heard from community members that they were missing the Christmas show from years past, and since I am involved with the local artist community, I decided I might be able to organize a show for this year.”

There will be one major difference with this show; it will be more of a community-centred event.  Randle, a resident of the area, knows the importance of community, especially in a smaller, rural location. It is important to feature all of the local talent, from NAEC student artists to community groups who wish to spread the word or fundraise for their cause.

The proceeds of the booth rentals go back to North Addington Education Centre, and vendors also have the option of making a donation of a portion of their proceeds.  Visitors to the Northern Highlights Fair can also make a food bank donation, in keeping with the spirit of the season.

Randle has been working on this event since August, and has had the support of NAEC staff and community members.  Vice Principal, Angela Salmond, is very excited about the show, “In the past, this show was the "kick off" to the holiday season.  It's a great way for young students to buy a gift for someone special and for the rest of us to get started.  I am thrilled that Ms. Randle has brought this back to NAEC--it is a wonderful community event."

The show will consist of 18 vendors in the gym (including staff, student and artisans) and a number of school and community groups in the foyer.  Another major difference with this show is the price accessibility. “Every vendor must sell items below $5 and a significant portion of their wares must be below $30, in order to make it affordable to students and community members,” said Randle

There will be a fantastic variety of items for sale at the event, including photography, painting, ornaments, chocolate, woodworking, candles, bath and spa products, jewelry, knitting and even an option to get a picture taken with Santa.  Randle is confident that people will enjoy the evening, "There will be something for everyone; you can get your holiday shopping done in one place, and support a great cause at the same time.”

The event will run on Wednesday, November 26 at North Addington Education Centre, from 1 to 8pm.  Customers are reminded not to park in the main driveway between 2:20pm to 2:50pm to allow the buses to safely pick up students.
