The countdown is on for the Sharbot Lake Relay For Life

Sponsored by the Canadian Cancer Society. Up to 400 participants and volunteers are expected to congregate at  the Parham Ball Field overnight on Friday June 6 & 7.

Claire Macfarlane, RFL Chair, says, “Everyone is welcome to come and join their family and neighbours for the Opening Ceremony, the Survivors’ Lap and the Luminary Ceremony.  Arrive at 6 p.m. to take in the start of the activities. These events can be very emotional but will be followed by the comic relief of the costume parade and  the Relay. Twenty-eight teams have already registered and each is gearing up to win the prize for the most unique costume or theme. Later at around 10 p.m. stay to observe  the Luminary Ceremony and stand for a moment of silence as we remember our family and friends who have or are suffering from cancer. Be with your neighbours and they will appreciate your support. Do come!”
Program coordinators Gary Giller and Jim MacPherson have arranged for a full night of entertainment including the bands Red Rose Express, Synapse, and Tell Mamma.  Later, participants will entertain their peers with karaoke, team cheers and board or card games like euchre .
What about the Relay? This is serious business as team members have committed to their sponsors that they would walk all night to support  the fight against cancer. As a team they will. Each team will have one or two members walking on the track at all times through the night as they take turns in this shared experience. Their honour would not let them do otherwise.
Walkers do get hungry and thirsty! Anne Howes, Food Services Coordinator, says she has over 1000 bottles of water, pots full of chili, sandwiches and sweets to provide energy for the walkers.  The Oso Fire Department, District #3, have volunteered to cook the walkers a pancake breakfast when the morning light dawns.
We are thankful for the preliminary  efforts of Dave MacDonald, who is in charge of Logistics and Facilities. Presently Norm Landry is substituting for Dave. Thanks to Dave’s notes from last year’s Relay, Norm will be guided as he sets up the Relay Village with its tents, chairs, tables, and signs.

Marcel Giroux is very proud of the support of the corporate sponsors. Their generosity  has helped make this year's event proceed smoothly and on time.
Finally a word about our volunteers from Coordinator Bernie Slavin, who says, “Our volunteers are eager, confident, skilled and ready  to share the work and make this year’s Relay For Life a huge success.”
There is still time to join a team. Call Dianne Lake, 613-279-2991; dlake@frontenac.net
