Challenge yourself: volunteer

As a student at Sharbot Lake High School there is never a dull moment in my life.  I am constantly busy going from one place to another trying to assist in challenging and exciting projects.  Even though I live the busy life of a student and teenager, I believe one of the most important things that I can do is help others.  On the surface it might seem to some that I am an overachiever, but this is not the case.  Volunteering my time allows me to make a difference in the lives of others.

Sharbot Lake High School is quite possibly one of the places in my life where I am most heavily involved.  I gladly volunteer to assist in planning tournaments, fundraising for any athletic events and helping teens have fun and stay active.  Not only does this help my school, but also I feel great helping students and staff.   Being involved in these activities has taught me valuable time management and communication skills, two really important skills that employers look for in perspective employees.

I have spent my past few summers volunteering at a children’s camp and through this work I have seen the many lives that volunteering can touch. I honestly believe volunteering is far more important than material things. It builds character, self-esteem, and is a terrific learning experience, not to mention a blast! To see the look in a child's eyes when you have helped coach them to a victory, or the joy received when you take them horse back riding for the first time is remarkable! Volunteers are a vital part of all communities. I would like to encourage everyone to volunteer. It's not only an important learning experience, but also a special way to lend a helping hand and more importantly ... your heart!!!
