Tay Valley Township - public meeting regarding recreation cost sharing

The Council of Tay Valley Township invites its residents and taxpayers to a Public Meeting at Glen Tay Public School on Tuesday, August 28 at 7pm to discuss current and future recreation programs, facilities and activities for Tay Valley Township taxpayers and residents.

Tay Valley provides a number of parks, river access and swimming places, play structures, outdoor rinks, a tennis court and two community recreation halls, programs in baseball, soccer, hockey and a community choir. In addition the township is a partner with the school board for the outside area around Glen Tay Public School as a community park and sports field, and with the Town of Perth and Lanark Highlands in the operations of some of their facilities.

For a number of years Tay Valley has had a supportive partnership with Perth and Drummond/North Elmsley, providing funding towards Conlon Farm, the Perth Community Centre (indoor rink) and the Perth Pool. This partnership was initially very informal, and in 2002 was formalized based upon a signed agreement and a financial formula developed in conjunction with Perth, Tay Valley, Drummond North Elmsley and a consultant.  The change saw a significant increase in costs and taxes to Tay Valley taxpayers, and they have increased each year.

The Town of Perth believes the increases have not been adequate, and in August 2006 passed a motion advising Tay Valley and Drummond/North Elmsley that they wished to renegotiate the agreement by March 31, 2007.  Tay Valley agreed and in October 2006 invited Perth to schedule a meeting to start negotiations. Perth declined to schedule a meeting.

Tay Valley invites their residents and taxpayers to this public meeting to hear how they want this and future Tay Valley Councils to shape their recreation programs, facilities and activities for the future.

In addition, the Reeve of Tay Valley Township has called for a Special Council Meeting to be held immediately following the Public Meeting at Glen Tay Public School on August 28.
