For the months of July and August, Kennebec Community Centre in Arden is home to a unique children’s day camp program.
Community Living North Frontenac runs the camp on Thursdays and Fridays, and has put a lot of thought into planning activities that will help include children from a range of backgrounds. “This is an integrated summer camp experience,” says Barb Matson, who
runs the camp with Lorraine Garey. Fifteen spaces were set aside for children from the community, and the other 15 kids are individuals who are supported by the services of Community Living.
The camp runs from 9am to 3pm and presents some creative and engaging activities for the kids involved. The mornings are filled with games and crafts, while the afternoons leave time for special workshop sessions (on Thursdays) or a movie (Fridays).
“Several members of the community have stepped up and volunteered their time to the kids,” says Barb. Diane Nicholson shared her line dancing abilities with the group on July 19, and several other local artists and musicians will be contributing. Pottery making with Joanne Pickett, pizza making with Marty Brown, and music with Norman Guntensperger are just a few of the workshops planned for the coming Thursdays.
