Walk for a Cure successful

Despite the cold, damp weather, a large group of people gathered in the band shelter at Oso Beach in Sharbot Lake last Saturday morning as they prepared to participate in Walk for a Cure.

Over 30 walkers lined up at 10am to make the trek up the K&P Trail to Highway 7 and back. They were led by 6 cancer survivors, who wore yellow ribbons and carried a “Canadian Cancer Society” banner to mark the event.

Cheryl Bird, manager for the Frontenac, Lennox and Addington unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, was on hand accepting registration forms and donations. “This is our third Walk in Sharbot Lake ,” she said. “This year is our biggest yet, with 33 participants.”

The donations collected by the walkers came to a total of over $2,100, and will go to cancer research and the Canadian Cancer Society’s fight to “Make Cancer History.”

“Next year a ‘Relay for Life’ event is being planned for Sharbot Lake ,” Cheryl Bird shared. This is a 12-hour, all night event to pay tribute to the lives of loved ones who have been touched by cancer, and to raise money for cancer research.
