Maguire will not seek re-election in North Frontenac

by Jeff Green

North Frontenac Mayor Ron Maguire has decided not to seek re-election this fall.

His decision comes as a surprise, as earlier this year he expressed his intention to run for a second term.

Maguire released the following short statement regarding his decision on Monday of this week.

After much reflection I have decided not to stand for re-election this fall. The mayor's job was interesting and challenging and I enjoyed working for the people. Throughout my life I have taken pride in trying a variety of career opportunities and I wish to keep my options open for the next few years.  I sincerely thank all those who supported me.”

Maguire ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 2000, and was acclaimed into the job in 2003. His term as mayor was distinguished by improvements to the township budgeting process, and this fall, staff and council will be engaging in a long-term capital planning initiative, which was something Maguire had been pushing since he first ran for the mayor’s job in 2000.

Maguire worked for many years for the Department of Indian Affairs in Ottawa , and as Mayor of North Frontenac he has been the representative of Frontenac County to the Algonquin Land Claim Municipal Advisory Board. In recent months he has been central to the township’s response to an ongoing and controversial development project on land at Pine Lake by the Ardoch Algonquin First Nation and Allies.

The News was unable to contact Ron Maguire for further details on his decision before our press deadline on Tuesday evening.
